The Blessing of Adversity
"He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and glorify him" (Psalm 91:15).
Prayer in times of distress tends to bring the spirit into perfect submission to the will of God; it brings the believer's will into conformity with the divine will, removes complaints, and frees the soul from any attitude of rebellion.
Prayer sanctifies the problem for our good, preparing the heart and making it docile under the discipline of God's hand, and it places us where God can give us the greatest spiritual good. In God's thoughts, the outcome of trouble is always good. If problems fail to accomplish their mission, it is because of prayerlessness or because of our unbelief.
Being in harmony with God always transforms the problem into blessing. The good or evil of the conflict is determined by the spirit in which it is received. Adversity proves to be blessing or curse according to how it is received and treated.
Hardships either soften or harden us. They either bring us closer to God and prayer, or they drive us away from God and the habit of prayer. The same sun softens the wax and hardens the clay; and it is the same sun that melts the ice and dries the moisture of the earth. (E.M. Bounds).
