LIVING WATERS
For the proclamation of the Gospel and the edification of the Body of Christ
There Is No Work in Vain for God
"So, my beloved brethren, stand firm and constant, growing in the work of the Lord always, knowing that your labor in the Lord is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58).
Everything we do for the Lord, however small it may seem, has its reward. Sometimes we get discouraged by not seeing positive results in our work, but the Lord does not reward us according to our criteria, but according to his; and according to that, the smallest work we do for Him will bear its fruit and will have a reward.
David and Svea Flood, a young Swedish couple, worked as missionaries in the Belgian Congo (now Zaire). The chief of the tribe they would be working with made their lives miserable and forbade all members of the tribe to speak to them. Only a little boy was allowed to sell them chickens and eggs, but every time he talked to Svea, she told him about Christ and he accepted him as her Savior.
Then she got pregnant, but due to malaria she died leaving an orphan girl. David was filled with bitterness against God, said that because of God he had lost his wife, and he gave the girl to another young missionary couple. He later returned to Sweden where he became an alcoholic.
But a few years later, that little African boy grew up and, with the permission of the tribal chief, he built a school where he won all his students to Christ. They preached to their parents and also converted to the Lord. Even the chief of the tribe gave his life to Christ! Hundreds of African Christians flourished as a result of the work of those young missionaries, although David came to think that nothing had been worth it.
Not! Work in the Lord is not in vain! Therefore: "Be strong, and do not fail your hands, for there is a reward for your work" (2 Chronicles 15:7).
