The Testimony of God
When we talk about testimony, we often see people talking about their former lives of sin, drugs, worldliness, etc. However, that is the testimony of men. The testimony we are to give is not our own, but God's, and this testimony has nothing to do with me alone, but with everyone.
God says that we were all born in iniquity, and in sin our mothers conceived us (Ps. 51:5). "All of us are like filth, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags" (Isa. 64:6). We are born sinners, and therefore we are of the devil: "He who practises sin is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning" (1 John 3:8). Because of sin, we will receive death as our wages: "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Rom. 6:23). It does not matter if someone was a great sinner, or considers himself righteous because he never stole or killed anyone, because before God, "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Rom. 3:23).
But God, who is rich in mercy, sent His Son Jesus into the world so that we might be saved through Him: "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). Jesus is our peace; he is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). He reconciled us to God: "And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind because of your evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and irreproachable before him" (Colossians 1:21-22). He died for us and brought us to die with him.
We died with Christ and rose again with him to walk in newness of life: "…even when we were dead in sins, he gave us life together with Christ (by grace you are saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus" (Eph. 2:5-6). Now it is no longer I who live: "I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me" (Gal. 2:20).
This is the testimony of God, the testimony that the Father gives about his Son: "If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony that God has given about his Son.He who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given concerning His Son. And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life" (1 John 5:9-12).
