Tasters from the King's Table

The time of the Lord

"Then Jesus said to them, My time has not yet come, but your time is always ready" (John 7: 6).

Often in Scripture we find that God is a God of timing and very specific times. According to His eternal plan and His absolute knowledge of all the circumstances, He unfolds events with precision, in the appropriate time and place.

When we read Genesis 1 what impresses us is the order of God in creation and the precise timings set for everything. Then, looking at the course of events, how everything occurred in its time to conclude with the arrival of the Lord Jesus and His glorious work on the cross, we can perceive a superior Mind and a superior Will, which is what also regulates us, and whose designs we do well to heed.

The Lord Himself, in the 33 years of His earthly life, gave examples of being subject to the times and seasons of God. He did not hasten or delay the timing of the cross, but He walked towards it. He refused everything that could have hastened it, as well as what might have delayed it. He said: "My time has not yet come." When he set his face to go up to Jerusalem, He did so because the time had arrived. Men could plan their lives and move according to their own will, but He did not.

From the day when we decided to consecrate ourselves to the Lord, He must have control over all of our times and seasons. We know nothing about what is best for His glory. Only He can move us forward or stop us. Our dates and schedules may not be of any use to the Lord, even though they seem to us to be the most appropriate. His thoughts and His ways are higher than ours.

He alone is the Lord. We are only his servants.
